Susie to Kris, Chapter 4

Susie (JP: スージィ) is one of the main characters of Deltarune. She is the rude and rebellious second hero of the prophecy, who warms up to others in later Chapters. Susie does not have a known home, though she becomes dismissive at the east apartments in Chapter 4.

While in the Dark World, Susie wields an axe in encounters. She boasts the highest max HP and Attack in the party, allowing her to tank hits and deal high damage when FIGHTing. Susie can use MAGIC, and her spells primarily deal damage, such as Rude Buster. In Chapter 2, she later learns a healing spell, which improves as the story progresses.

Profile

Appearance

Susie is a tall, teenage reptilian monster with lavender purple scales. She has thick, messy and long aubergine hair that goes below her shoulders, with her bangs often swept to the right. Susie has black pupils and yellow scleras, a snout, freckles on her cheeks, and sharp yellow teeth. Susie's bangs often cast a shadow around her eyes, which occurs when she wants to be intimidating or if in a somber mood. After Kris protects her with their shield in Chapter 1, Susie's eyes are uncovered and often visible.

Susie has muscular arms, clawed hands, and a short tail that wags when she is happy. She is embarrassed by the latter,[2] and refuses to let others see or acknowledge it.[3] Susie's reaction to Jevilstail indicates that she would rather not have a short tail.[4] Her Light World attire consists of a royal purple unzipped long-sleeved jacket,[5] a white shirt, light blue torn and baggy jeans, and a pair of black shoes.

In the Dark World, Susie's scales change to orchid purple, and her hair is dark plum colored. Her clothes are replaced with a long black sleeveless vest with purple-trimming, a sleeveless dark purple shirt, a black belt with a golden heart buckle, dark plum cargo pants, and black boots with golden soles. Around Susie's wrists and triceps are sets of black bracelets with golden spikes.

Susie's "Sheeh!" pose when surprised

Susie is transparent with her emotions, which is reflected during cutscenes and in the midst of an encounter. She often makes an exaggerated expression and pose when angered, surprised, or amused. Some of these sprites occasionally depicts Susie's sclera and teeth as white instead of yellow. Some of these poses are also references, such as her "Sheeh!" pose, which originates from the Osomatsu-kun manga, or performing a team fist pump pose similar to Crono's victory pose in Chrono Trigger.

Personality

Susie is outspoken, rude, sarcastic, brutally honest, and quick to insult.[6] She is selfish and rebellious, tending to protest or favor her own interests.[7] At times, she threatens with physical violence, occasionally as a joke.[8] In a Dark World, Susie generally has no qualms with FIGHTing Darkners unless she is friends with them.[9]

Susie screenshot eye reveal.png
Susie bravely stands up to King after saving Kris

However, Susie is more gentle and more mindful to those who are kind to her. With friends, she is expressive, willing to talk about herself and considerate of their opinions. Susie enjoys being with her friends, and often favors teasing them. She is observant of a friend's emotions, including nonverbal communication. If she sees a friend in discomfort, Susie often tries to be compassionate by being concerned, but often choosing to not ask about stressful topics.[10] Susie is also loyal, readily wanting to assist a friend if they are in danger or troubled.

In general, Susie enjoys childish antics and causing mischief. This ranges from dressing up as a box,[11] wanting to enter a freezer[12] to chasing Maus on all fours.[13] She likes compliments, and is easily flattered. Susie enjoys receiving gifts, and is possessive of items given to her.[14] She also can refuse certain equipment choices, such as having armor removed[15] or re-equipping Mane Ax, and dislikes wearing ribbons.

Susie is said to struggle academically,[16] often arriving at school late[17] and has trouble spelling.[18][19]

Susie has a large appetite, as she complains if Ralsei is given Dark Candy.[20] She eats almost anything, such as chalk,[21] and she reacts positively to the non-food in her refrigerator in Ralsei's castle. Susie favors moss,[22] Darkburger,[23][24] marshmallows,[25] and peppermint, such as the Light World version of ReviveMint. She also drinks milk that Alphys leaves in the alley,[26] though Alphys believes her to be a cat she named "MewMew".[27]

Susie overworld couch sleeping.gif
Susie sleeping on the couch

She seems to fall asleep easily, as Ralsei's Sing instantly makes her sleep. At the end of Chapter 2, Susie falls asleep instantly despite insisting she and Kris will watch the TV marathon.[28]

At the start of Deltarune, Susie has low self-esteem and is aware of her faults, such as being selfish and struggling academically. She can also occasionally project her traits onto others.[29] Susie is initially convinced that no one likes her,[30] and is oblivious to Noelle's crush on her.[31] Due to constantly dealing with past stereotyping, false friendships, and frequently moving, Susie resorts to feigning being aloof and distant.[32]

As the Chapters progress, Susie grows more confident in herself, and begins to embrace her role as a hero from the prophecy.[33] She also begins to realize her potential by accepting to continue thinking in her own way,[34] and reluctantly admits that she is becoming softer due to Ralsei's influence.[35] Even after learning of the prophecy's ending, Susie remains defiant, adamantly claiming that she will not let it happen.[36]

Speech pattern

Susie tends to be vulgar, swears frequently, and occasionally speaks informally.[37] Her casualness includes referring to others as a "dude" in a gender-neutral sense.[38] Susie's dialogue tends to have words in uppercase letters for emphasis, or extra question marks and exclamation marks to reflect her confusion.[31]

Main story

History

Years prior to Deltarune, Susie had moved to many different towns before moving to Hometown. In one of the past towns, she once tried to play the public piano at the town's plaza, but was prevented from doing so.[39] That night, Susie returned to the plaza and vandalized the piano by smashing it.[40] She has attended at least one other school.

In Hometown, Susie attends the same class as Kris, having arrived as a new student at some point. At an unspecified time after Susie's arrival to Hometown, Toriel found her crying at the graveyard's bench, to which she took Susie to QC's Diner, bought her a hot chocolate and comforted her.[41] Susie is close to being expelled from school due to unknown past incidents[42] and is feared among her classmates as well as by Alphys, due to her bad behavior and threatening appearance. Monster Kid described her as "creepily" watching them and their friends playing handball on one occasion; when the ball rolled over to her, she kicked the ball as hard as possible at Undyne's car.[43]

It is vaguely implied that Susie has had a rough home life. Her reaction to her room in Ralsei's castle implies she is unfamiliar with the concept of having her own room,[44] and her tendency to eat pretty much anything even remotely edible could indicate she has been living off of whatever scraps she could find for an extended period of time. Susie also does not contact her parents when being asked to do so by Toriel. Her aggressive disposition, then, could be a byproduct of said home life. In Chapter 4, interacting with the easternmost tenement building prompts her to describe it as "boring" in an attempt to deflect Kris's attention, implying she lives there.

Chapter 1

Susie abruptly enters the classroom and is late to class. Due to their tardiness, Alphys assigns Kris to be her partner for a group project. Susie leaves when Alphys tasks her with retrieving chalk from the school's supply closet.

Outside the classroom, Susie eats a stick of chalk, then notices Kris. She accosts Kris, slamming them against the lockers, but relents upon considering Toriel.[45] Instead, Susie states Kris will work on the entire group project. Before Kris can respond, she interjects and walks ahead.[46]

Upon opening the supply closet, Susie is discomforted from it being pitch-black. She tries to goad Kris to enter, but ends up reasoning that they go inside together.[47] Upon failing to find a light switch, the floor suddenly gives way, and they both fall into the closet Dark World.

Susie wakes up in an unknown area alone and retreats into a dust pile. She gets scared by Kris when they destroy her hiding place, then blames Kris for the incident before impatiently leaving.[48] When they are later attacked by a shrouded silhouette, Susie tells Kris to run as the two are chased into an empty Castle Town.[49]

In it, Susie and Kris meet Ralsei, who offers to tell them a prophecy. Despite Kris's response, Susie dismisses Ralsei and is skeptical.[50] Susie and Kris are then attacked by Lancer, and she uses her ax to FIGHT.[51] Susie later departs on her own to follow Lancer's and Ralsei's directions.[52]

In Field, Susie causes an onslaught against Card Kingdom's Darkners, including eating a BrokenCake.[53][54] She walks through puzzle spikes and ends up kicking a closed Delta Rune door until Kris and Ralsei find her.[55] Susie agrees to join the party when Ralsei reasons with her, but attacks C. Round despite Kris's order.[56]

Along the way, Susie menaces Lancer, unintentionally inspiring him to act like her.[57] Susie and the party later find Lancer at the Great Board, where Susie appreciates his praise and contributes a team name for the three party members.[58] When Lancer expresses fear versus K. Round, Susie refuses to stop FIGHTing to show she is not intimidated.[59] She gets admonished by Ralsei for doing so, which causes her to feel undervalued and form a team with Lancer.[60]

In Forest, Susie plots various schemes with Lancer and gradually forms a close friendship with him. This culminates into a tag-team battle against Kris and Ralsei near the end of Forest, but upon their defeat, Susie agrees to rejoin the party. On the path to Card Castle, Susie continues to show concern for Lancer and runs off after him once he flees. She is caught by King's minions and imprisoned before she can enter Card Castle.

In Card Castle's prison, Susie receives help from Kris on a puzzle, which unlocks her cell door. On her way to Kris and Ralsei's cell, she overhears Lancer ordering his minions not to let them leave. Personally offended by his actions,[30] Susie initiates a battle against Lancer, but she misses the final strike. As Lancer explains his motives, Susie assures him that she will not harm his father, allowing the two to make up and reinforce their friendship.

Susie rides an elevator to the first floor with Kris and Ralsei. During the ride, she expresses an interest in ACTing with them and agrees to listen to Kris's commands. Susie traverses Card Castle and confronts King, who initially feigns defeat but later violently subdues her and the party. When King threatens Kris, Susie strikes from behind, revealing her eyes. King is later defeated either with the help of Card Kingdom's Darkners or through Ralsei's Pacify spell.

Kris seals the Eastern Fountain, and they and Susie wake up in the unused classroom. Susie declares her desire to return to the Dark World the next day and leaves the school.

Chapter 2

The next day, Susie's desire to return to the Dark World motivates her to go to school on time. Post class, she admits her excitement to Kris, and questions if their adventure was real before pulling them to the supply closet.[61] When the two get interrupted by Noelle's study invite, Susie is confused by her kindness and becomes secretive about their fated roles.[62]

In Castle Town, Susie reunites with Ralsei and frets over its emptiness. Once Kris returns with Card Kingdom's Darkners, she high-fives Lancer and is eager to see her room that Ralsei created.[29] When Kris leaves, Susie expresses distaste for their homework, causing Ralsei to expel the two.[63]

At the library, Susie finds the computer lab contains a Dark World, and enters it with Kris. In the Cyber World, she gets antagonized by Queen, and attests to Queen capturing Noelle.[38] Determined to rescue Noelle, Susie and Kris venture through Cyber Field after reuniting with Ralsei. She and the party later confronts Berdly, who had voluntarily joined forces with Queen, and later falls into Cyber City post encounter.

In the Trash Zone, Susie jokes atop a large trash mound and falls, injuring herself. When Ralsei heals her, she gains an interest in learning healing magic.[64] At a forked path, Susie excitedly drags Ralsei away from Kris.[7] The two of them later reunites with Kris and Noelle at the ball-toss stalls, where she performs her newly-learned healing magic on Kris. Near Queen's Mansion, Susie and the party get captured by Queen.

In her own personalized room at Queen's Mansion, Susie is freed by Lancer, who quickly turns to stone. Resolving to rescue Noelle and Lancer, Susie traverses the mansion. She arrives in Noelle's room and pacifies two Werewires accosting Noelle. The two proceed to ride a Ferris wheel together. Upon being interrupted by Berdly, Susie jumps down and rejoins Kris and Ralsei.

Susie confronts Queen, who had recaptured Noelle and Berdly soon after she left them. Upon her defeat, Queen boards her GIGA Queen mecha and attacks the party, but Susie defeats her in the party's own Thrash Machine mecha. Kris then seals the library Fountain, and the group all wake up in the computer lab. Susie travels with Kris to their house, where Toriel invites her to stay over. The two bake pie together, but the session is cut short when Toriel discovers her tires had been slashed. Susie sleeps over at Toriel's insistence and falls asleep while watching TV.

Chapter 3

A spotlight shines on Susie and Ralsei

Susie and Kris wake up in a new Dark World. Reuniting with Ralsei once again, she proposes to him that he should join her and Kris at the upcoming festival.[65] Susie angrily confronts Ralsei when he explains his limitation as a Darkner, and declares that she will not leave him behind.[66] Just then, the trio is interrupted by Tenna, who introduces himself as the host of TV Time, with the trio as his contestants. Susie initially refuses to participate, but she is convinced by Ralsei to try it.[67]

As HERO_AXE, Susie plays through Desert Board with the party, where she occasionally criticizes the game and helps collect POINTs. After its completion, she partakes as a chef in and the Cooking Show physical challenge. In the Green Room, Susie privately thanks Tenna for the experience, claiming that it has helped to cheer both her and Ralsei up. During the second round, Susie secretly switches controllers with Kris during the Island Board, irritating Ralsei when he finds out. During the Rock Video physical challenge, Susie plays the role of the drummer, slamming the drums and causing her audio to be muted.

After the second round, Susie accidentally overhears an incriminating conversation about the Lightners between Tenna and his subordinates. Now suspicious of Tenna, Susie convinces the party to sneak out of the Green Room to investigate. After reaching the Cold Place, the trio discovers Toriel, held hostage by Tenna. When Tenna sends them back to his show and attempts to make them play another round, Susie demands he let them and Toriel go. Tenna responds by imprisoning the party in gachapon capsules and forcing them to continue playing. Susie manages to escape, causing Tenna to panic and search for her and the party.

Once the group returns to the Cold Place, Tenna confronts them and engages them in battle. Susie initially responds with hostility but has a change of heart after their battle. When Tenna confesses that he is afraid to be thrown away, Susie empathizes by explaining how she was never able to form any solid friendships and that she felt alone and unwanted like he did, until she found proper friends. She offers to help Tenna find a new owner in the Light World who will want to use him in exchange for letting the party go, along with Toriel.

Tenna happily agrees and releases Toriel, but the Knight intervenes, attacking Tenna and attempting to capture Toriel. Susie throws herself in between them and engages in battle against the Knight. It incapacitates Susie and the others before attempting to take Toriel again. Susie weakly grabs its leg in an attempt to stop it, but before the Knight can react, it is distracted by Undyne's arrival. The Knight leaves Toriel behind and abducts Undyne instead, leaving the Dark World.

Susie and Kris pursue the Knight back into the Light World and follow it back to the shelter, which appears to contain another Dark World inside. The doors slam shut before the pair can enter, leaving Susie to slam her fists against them. She then discovers an electronic lock on the door, but has no idea how to open it. Susie reluctantly admits defeat and decides to go back and seal the Dreemurr residence Fountain, leaving Kris behind at the shelter.

Chapter 4

In the reverted Dreemurr residence, Susie eats pancakes with Toriel and Kris, then hesitantly agrees to attend church service with them. If Kris listens to Catty's reciting, Susie reacts to Kris's inventory. Afterwards, she asks Kris to question the churchgoers about the shelter codes. Concluding that their best lead is Noelle's mother and the mayor of Hometown, Carol, Susie proposes they sneak into Noelle's House to investigate.

In Noelle's House, Susie distracts Noelle as Kris searches the house alone. When the power suddenly goes out, she and Noelle find what they believe is a mouse in the house's basement. Leaving it alone to find something to contain it, Susie and Noelle discover that it has escaped and investigate noises coming from Dess's room. Susie opens the closet and finds Kris with Dess's guitar, which she takes. Carol arrives at the house shortly after, confiscates the guitar, and expels Susie from the house.

Having failed her investigation, Susie returns to the church to wait for Toriel, but she instead discovers a Dark World has taken form inside the church's lobby. In the Dark Sanctuary, she confronts the Knight, but she and Kris are knocked back to the lower levels of the Dark World. Reuniting with Ralsei again, Susie grows insecure about her healing abilities after he heals Kris. She traverses the Dark Sanctuary and discovers tapestries depicting a more elaborate version of the prophecy Ralsei offered to tell them. Susie grows suspicious of Ralsei's increasingly erratic behavior, but Ralsei repeatedly dismisses her concerns.

As she traverses the Dark Sanctuary to find a way back to the Dark Fountain, Susie meets the Old Man, who feigns ignorance and absent-mindedness. She initially expresses annoyance but gradually forms a friendship with him after he helps her overcome her insecurities. Before leaving the Dark Sanctuary, the Old Man asks Susie to write a letter on his behalf. Susie accepts and heads to the Dark Fountain, but she confronts the Knight again. It flees through a Great Door as she gives chase. With nowhere left to go, Susie and Kris seal the Dark Fountain.

In the Light World, Susie discovers a locked door in the church's lobby containing another Dark World. While searching the lobby for the code to the lock, she discovers a memento of the deceased Gerson, which anchored his Darkner reproduction as the Old Man. In hopes that the Old Man would know the code to the lock, she creates a Dark Fountain in the church's lobby.

Susie searches the 2nd Sanctuary for signs of the Old Man, but she instead encounters the Sound of Justice, a shrouded figure she believes to be the Old Man. When it suddenly attacks her, she demonstrates her improved healing on the figure, exposing its true nature as an animated statue. When Ralsei destroys the statue and explains that Gerson's remains were incompatible with her Dark World, Susie angrily confronts him about his behavior. Ralsei explains that he was trying to hide the final part of the prophecy from Susie, and the two subsequently make up after Ralsei promises to be more honest.

Susie screenshot bleeding.png

After learning the code to the locked door from the fire extinguisher, Susie and Kris seal the Dark Fountain and unlock the door. In the 3rd Sanctuary, Susie confronts the Knight, who creates a Dark Fountain and gives form to a Titan.[68] Susie defeats the Titan with the Old Man's assistance and runs ahead against Ralsei's protests. Ralsei watches as Susie shatters the final part of the prophecy, causing her hand to bleed as a result. She reassures him that the three would not allow the prophecy to come to pass.[36]

Kris seals the 3rd Sanctuary Fountain and returns to the Light World with Susie. Realizing that Toriel is still unaccounted for, she returns to Kris's house only to find her dancing with Sans in the living room. She leaves the house and returns in the middle of the night to say something from outside as Kris watches.

Weird Route

In Cyber City, Susie does not meet up with Kris again until they arrive at the Queen's Mansion entrance. There, she notices Kris's pained expression and offers to use her newly-learned healing magic on them.[69] While traversing the mansion, Susie finds Noelle's room and has a private talk with her. Afterward, Susie leaves the room concerned for Noelle.

After Queen agrees to abandon her plans, Susie leaves to check on Noelle and is subsequently absent from the battle against Spamton NEO. Returning to the Light World, she expresses that it feels as though they did not just save the world despite sealing the Dark Fountain.

The next day, after gathering the clues regarding the shelter at church, Susie and Kris are directly invited by Noelle to study at her house. Susie moves to high five Kris but is confused when they do not reciprocate. She then explains how the events "took a weird route" just then before leaving the church with Kris.

At Noelle's House, Susie directs Kris to search for clues while she distracts Noelle. She then investigates the house herself and finds Dess's guitar, but she did not get a chance to write it down before being expelled from the house by Carol.[70] After the events at the house, she expresses disappointment that she did not get to hang out with Noelle. She later expresses suspicion regarding Noelle's private conversation with Kris.[71]

Relationships

Kris

Prior to Deltarune, Susie knows very little about Kris. She has often watched Toriel hold Kris's hand when going to school.[72]

Kris and Susie screenshot promise.png
Susie and Kris promise to go back to the school supply closet the next day

In Chapter 1, Susie is hostile to Kris when they catch her eating chalk and not responding to her.[73] However, their shared fear of entering the darkened supply closet causes Susie to warm up to Kris.[47] She lets Kris solve puzzles, as she is disinterested in solving them.[74]

When Susie forms a "DARK" team with Lancer, she tries to invite Kris to be a part of her team.[75] Due to their roles as heroes, Kris leading the party, and Susie deciding to spare King, she entrusts Kris to help her make better choices in battles.[76][77] When Kris actively shields Susie from King's attack, she reciprocates protecting them, and considers Kris her friend.

In Chapter 2, Susie's friendship with Kris grows, as she is eager to spend time with them. Thus, she is more observant of Kris's reactions, though she occasionally projects some of her traits onto Kris and frequently teases them.[29] When Kris struggles to use the arcade machine, Susie offers to help them. At Spamton's shop, Susie is hopeful that Kris bought candy to share.[78] If Spamton NEO was defeated, Susie notices Kris being unsettled, and tries to comfort them, with her response varying based on Kris's.

After their adventure in the Cyber World, Susie waits for Kris outside of the library and asserts that the two can walk back to the Dreemurr residence.[79] She continues to be considerate of Kris if they visit the shelter and overhear Monster Kid and Snowy's conversation.[10]

Susie amused upon discovering that Kris casually carries a knife

During Chapters 3 and 4, Susie and Kris are shown to have grown even closer. They spend the entire day together, including their time outside the Dark World, despite the fact that it is not a school day. Susie shows concern for Kris when they are hurt and attempts to heal them, becoming panicked when she is unable to do so.[80] She also is comfortable enough around Kris to show her true personality and mess around with them, such as when they play with the items in Kris's pocket at church[81] or when they draw on the window together at the diner.[82] Susie is shown to admire Kris for multiple things, some examples being their ability to play the piano[83] and their flirting skills.[84] She acknowledges the fact that Kris is weird, but likes them regardless, unaware that some of the strange things they do are because of the player's influence.[85]

Ralsei

Susie is initially dismissive and distrusting of Ralsei's politeness and him claiming she is a hero.[50][52] She takes offense in him trying to suggest that she should stop being violent, which causes friction between the two when she feels undervalued.[86] Susie ends up teasing Ralsei when she teams up with Lancer instead.[60]

During Chapter 2, they interact with each other more and Ralsei heals Susie during a certain moment. Later, the two spend time together alone as a duo after splitting up with Kris in Cyber City. During this time, Susie teaches Ralsei sarcasm,[87] while Ralsei teaches her healing magic. While Kris is down in Queen's Mansion's Basement, the two hang out further, though Susie goes as far as pranking Ralsei by stealing his glasses and putting them on herself.[88]

Susie overworld Ralsei noogie.gif

Over the course of Chapter 3 and 4, Susie's relationship with Ralsei gradually becomes strained, first due to his inability to see himself as anything other than an object[89] and then due to him becoming increasingly secretive. Despite having learned healing magic from him, she believes it to be inadequate compared to his.[90] She also grows suspicious of his behavior, believing he is hiding something from her and Kris.[91] This comes to a head when he informs Susie that the Old Man could not be summoned again in the 2nd Sanctuary; Susie lashes out at him,[92] pushing him to tears as he admits he kept quiet about the prophecy to keep them from worrying.

Susie accepts Ralsei's apology, deciding that she does not care about the prophecy's ending and that they are still a team. She comforts Ralsei when he breaks down after failing to stop her from witnessing the ending,[93] showing that she ultimately has no hard feelings towards him.

Lancer

At first, Susie sees Lancer as a nuisance when he claims he would "thrash" her and Kris, to which she does instead.[94] When Lancer later claims she cannot stop him, Susie ridicules his laugh and menaces him.[57] She instead becomes flattered when he takes it as advice and compliments her.[95] After feeling undervalued, she teams up with Lancer and the two tease Ralsei together.[60]

The two are shown to be very close afterwards, with Susie looking out for his well-being, such as when he gets lost in the Forest maze. Even after Lancer betrays her trust, she is unable to bring herself to kill him, and reassures him that he is still her friend, despite the circumstances. Susie also bows to King for the sake of saving Lancer's life.

Susie and Lancer overworld high five.gif

During Chapter 2, Susie is generally happy to see Lancer whenever he appears, laughing together and giving high-fives. When Lancer gets cold in the mansion's guest hall, Susie carries him on her back to Ralsei, in hope he could heal Lancer, showing a caring side.

Noelle

Prior to Deltarune, Susie never bullied Noelle due to her kindness. On Susie's first day in school, Noelle had lent a pencil to her, which left a positive impression.[96]

In Chapter 2, Susie can be surprised by Noelle's sudden gift of a lunchbox full of chalk, though she is oblivious to Noelle's crush on her.[62] When Noelle and Susie both wind up in the Cyber World, Susie starts becoming protective of her, trying to prevent her capture by Queen and later working out a rescue plan for her together with Berdly. Susie ends up being the person to retrieve Noelle from her room, which they exit through a ride on a Ferris wheel. On the Ferris wheel, they talk about Noelle's fears while slowly getting comfortable with each other, and Susie eventually convinces Noelle that everything in the Dark World is a dream. After returning to the Light World, Susie slightly regrets lying to Noelle, as she wishes Noelle could know about the time they spent together.[97]

In Chapter 4, Noelle agrees to a study session with Susie and Kris at her house, eager to spend more time with Susie. While hanging out, they discover that they enjoy the same media, such as Blood Crushers, the skateboard game, and a horror webseries that Noelle introduces Susie to. While they sit in Dess's room, the two start talking about Noelle's "dream", and Susie tries to lead the conversation toward their ride on the Ferris wheel, but does not end up revealing that it was a real event. The two of them grow much closer in this Chapter, and learn a lot about their respective personalities and interests. Eventually, Noelle convinces Susie to play the guitar for her, and they continue talking to each other, alone, until they are interrupted by Asgore. By the end of the hang-out, Susie declares to Noelle's mother that she will take Noelle out to the festival the next day.[98] This implies Susie may reciprocate Noelle's feelings by now.

As of Chapter 4, it is clear that Noelle is dear to Susie, as she thinks of her when seeing gingerbread monsters[99] or drinking Rhapsotea.[100] In the 2nd Sanctuary, she asks Ralsei what the prophecy says about Noelle, and is disappointed when he only knows what items she can equip.[101] Susie also takes offense when Catti asks her to stay away from Noelle, defending her choice to spend time with whomever she wants.[102]

On the Weird Route, Susie seems unhappy that she could only spend very little time with the others at Noelle's House, and she seems concerned about what Noelle could have needed to talk to Kris about privately.

Rudy

Susie can meet Rudy for the first time in Chapter 2 if Kris visits the hospital with her. Rudy is aware of Noelle's crush on Susie and jokingly warns her he will beat Susie up if she lays a finger on Noelle, much to Susie's bemusement. However, the two quickly take to each other: at one point, Rudy remarks that Kris should have taken Susie to the movies instead of the hospital, and he and Susie joke that they should all go together. They also jokingly plan to beat up Sans when Rudy gets better. On the Weird Route, Rudy holds Susie back to give her some advice on impressing Noelle, though Susie comes out of the conversation perplexed.

Toriel

In Chapter 1, Susie is implied to have some respect for Toriel, since she refers to her as a "good mother" after she menaces Kris at the start of the Chapter. They meet each other for the first time on-screen in Chapter 2, when Kris and Susie go to the Dreemurr residence and Toriel invites her inside. Susie is further shown to respect Toriel immensely, with her hesitant replies, rigid stance when she initially enters the residence, and the choice to refer to Toriel as "Ma'am" when she apologizes for her vulgar response. Susie still remembers Toriel's name from their off-screen meeting, and is surprised when Toriel is able to recall hers.[103] They quickly become friendly with each other through light-hearted puns while they prepare a pie together.

In Chapter 3, it is revealed Toriel was the one who helped Susie get back on her feet when she found the latter crying at the graveyard. When the Knight attempts to kidnap Toriel not long afterwards, Susie is desperate to save her even after being incapacitated. In Chapter 4, when Susie discovers another Dark World in the church, she realizes Toriel may be in danger, and that they cannot risk leaving her with the Knight. She is visibly discomforted later on when she discovers that Toriel had instead spent the night drinking and dancing with Sans.

Knight

Susie and Knight overworld clash.gif
Susie locks blades with the Knight

Ever since the two have clashed, Susie views the Knight as one of her most hated enemies. She regards it as a threat to the lives of her friends and to both the Light and Dark Worlds. Initially, Susie does not interpret the Knight's actions as inherently malicious,[104] but her perception changes in Chapter 3 after witnessing it harm Tenna and attempt to abduct Toriel.

During their first confrontation, Susie actively mocks and derides the Knight to provoke it while focusing on protecting Toriel. When the Knight seemingly lowers its guard, Susie takes advantage of this and attempts to strike it down without hesitation. Even after the party is brutally beaten down, Susie continues to oppose the Knight, pursuing it after it kidnaps Undyne despite her exhaustion.

Following this, Susie becomes the most proactive member of the party in stopping the Knight. Whenever she gets the chance to confront it, Susie wastes no time attempting to strike it down, even attacking it from behind before engaging in conversation. Susie also seems to struggle to understand the Knight and its behavior. When prompted by the Old Man, she says that she has no idea who the Knight could be nor its motives, but speculates it may just want to see the world burn.

Old Man

Susie is initially annoyed by the Old Man's appearance, believing him to be a nuisance. However, when she expresses doubt about her healing magic, he tricks her into healing Jackenstein, which boosts her confidence. She begins warming up to him after he invites the party for tea, and shares stories about her adventures with him. Later on, Susie admits that he is the first person whose teachings have made her feel "LESS stupid".

The Old Man proud of Susie for besting his challenge

In the battle against the Old Man as the Hammer of Justice, Susie seems eager to prove herself to him. If she loses the fight, she refuses the Old Man's rewards, gladly preparing for a rematch instead.

After sealing the Dark Sanctuary Fountain, Susie is shocked to find a photo of the Old Man surrounded by dust in Alvin's desk, realizing that he was dead all along and was only temporarily resurrected as a Darkner. When she creates the 2nd Sanctuary, she wishes to see the Old Man again, but, instead, she is met with the Sound of Justice. She believes the creature is the Old Man, and attempts to convince him to come to Castle Town to get help. She also seems regretful at causing such a situation. When Ralsei explains why Susie could not bring the Old Man back via the 2nd Sanctuary, she lashes out in anger, distraught that she cannot see the Old Man again, and that Ralsei would not inform her of the Old Man's nature when it had been relevant.

Susie is elated by the Old Man's sudden intervention during the party's fight with the Titan in the 3rd Sanctuary and attempts to find him after the battle, but he disappears once again.

Creation and development

Susie artwork.png
One of Toby Fox's 2014/2015 concept art of Susie[105]

Some of Toby Fox's earliest teased concept arts for Susie existed as early as 2013, during the Undertale Kickstarter campaign.[106] He at some point also did some writing, as one of the earliest unused text he wrote for Susie was, "rests her chin on your head".[107]

Susie was originally inspired by Maya Fey from the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series, though Toby admits that Susie's character was too "nice and cute" before he changed her personality in favor of the story having tension.[108] He also at some point changed Susie's hairstyle to not be a ponytail.[109]

Susie overworld Dark World unused.png
Susie's unused Dark World palette

Early in Deltarune's development, Gigi helped work on Susie's character design, and has also designed the various alternate costumes for Susie.[110] Chess worked on Susie's Dark World palette and had created some base sprites and animations for Temmie Chang to work on.[111] In a 2019 Nintendo Switch interview, Toby also alludes to Susie struggling to learn a new spell.[112]

In the Undertale 6th anniversary stream, Toby Fox comments that he thinks he made Susie's hair too dark colored, since when Susie first appeared in the game, he states that some players "thought she was like a worm or something".[113] In addition, Toby also admits that the cutscene of Susie menacing Kris is inspired by a real bully in Toby's life, who was familiar with his mother.[114]

In the Japanese translation of Deltarune, Susie refers to herself as オレ (ore) which is a pronoun typically used by men, though at some moments she uses アタシ (atashi) when meeting Kris for the first time and Toriel in Chapter 2. It was Toby Fox's idea to make her come off as a delinquent.[115]

Susie overworld Annoying Dog.gif
Susie flailing as an Annoying Dog covers her face

Susie briefly appears in her Dark World attire, along with Kris and Ralsei in the DELTARUNE Chapter 1 Spoiler-Free Trailer. An Annoying Dog censors her face, to which she flails and tells the "mutt" to leave her alone.

Spamton Sweepstakes

During the Spamton Sweepstakes 2022 charity event, a page was added to the official Deltarune website regarding Susie. It is one of the private posts from Noelle's blog.

deltarune.com/the_n3w3st_g1rl_g1rl: Noelle mentions how Susie has been actively bullying Kris, and that they do not inform Toriel. She describes an incident after school where Kris was still asleep, and Susie became angry at them for using apple-scented shampoo. When Susie threatened them as she bit an apple, they suppressed a laugh. She threw the apple at them, and they deflected and bit it. Susie grabbed Kris by the hair, and claimed Toriel would be tired of them and would be happier when they disappear. Noelle notes that Kris whispered something in response, causing Susie to let go of Kris and abruptly leave.

Newsletter

In ISSUE 5 - Winter 2024 of the Newsletter, three random Valentine's Day cards were included in the email version of the Newsletter. However, Susie does not have her own Valentines cards. She instead indirectly appears in Ralsei's Valentines cards: one is common, and the other is a rare card.

In Ralsei's common second card, he is glad to know Susie likes the Valentines card that also had candy, but also asks Susie to stop eating the Valentines cards. Shortly after, Susie vandalizes this card.[116] This is similar to what occurs when inspecting the CYBERPEDIA in Chapter 2 a second time. Susie also appears in Ralsei's third card, which is a rare card meant for Lancer. In it, Ralsei details about Susie trying to get him to pretend to "smoke" a giant rolled tube made of Valentines papers.[117]

Undertale

In Undertale, a girl by the name of "Suzy" is mentioned by Clam Girl, a rare NPC in Waterfall who appears based on the fun value. In the Nintendo Switch version, Clam Girl can allude to the upcoming release of Deltarune, which came about a month after the port. After turning gray, she informs that the time to meet Suzy "... is fast approaching".

In battle

As party member

In Chapter 1, Susie automatically FIGHTs the topmost enemy in battle and cannot be ordered to use other commands.[118] Once she joins the party "for real", Susie can perform different commands. Darkners defeated by Susie before she joins the party is tracked with global flag 43, which can impact Chapter 1's route ending.[119] There are also separate flags for Susie defeating a Rudinn[120] or a Hathy.[121]

Title

Susie's title in the POWER stats menu varies depending on Chapter progress, with some being earned based on the player's choices.

Stats

LV HP Attack Defense Magic Guts
1 110 14 2 1 2
2 140-190 16-19 2 1-4 2
3 190-222 18-19 2 2-3 3
4 230-282 22-24 2 3-9 4
5 290-??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Susie gains +4 Magic after defeating the Hammer of Justice in Chapter 4.[122]

Susie's special stat changes: her first slot always lists "Rudeness", with its tally changing based on story progress. Her second slot changes based on the Chapter, with most tallies changing from the player's choices: it becomes "Crudeness", "Purple", "Plucked", or "Healing".

Spells

Susie battle spellready.gif
Susie preparing to cast a spell

Susie mainly has attack spells: her "Buster" spells does increased damage if the [CONFIRM] button is pressed before the projectile hits an enemy,[123] and Susie gains one healing spell as of Chapter 2 onwards. In certain boss battles, Susie can cast RedBuster or DualBuster through Kris's ACT menu.

Before casting any type of spell, Susie holds her ax straight with a pink flame on top of it and smiles. After this, she holds her ax in the air as it flashes white.

Name TP Effect Availability
Rude Buster 50%[note 1] Moderate to high damage Any
Healing Varies based on Chapter Heals an ally by a small amount Chapter 2+

S-Action

Susie battle act.gif
Susie's standard ACT

S-Action is learned in Chapter 2 and is available in later Chapters. It costs 0% TP, and functions similarly to Kris's ACT command, where Susie often does a different described ACT than Kris or Ralsei.[13] It is selected through her MAGIC menu and is performed independently from Kris's ACT command.

In some boss battles, it is replaced with a named ACT that costs TP, such as Supercharge or WakeKris.

As enemy

A Game Over does not occur in this encounter. Instead, Susie and Lancer laugh during the black screen, and the party respawns at the Maze SAVE point. The pre-battle dialogue varies for up to two losses.

Attacks

  • As a team attack, Susie jumps atop and squishes Lancer. Then, Lancer leaps high into the bullet board, while Susie launches multiple fast ax bullets that travels right.
  • As a solo attack, Susie launches seven slow and scattered ax projectiles, which travels left to right.

Strategy

Susie's enemy stats are internally altered from her party member stats, though it factors if she was given armor.

Kris has three ACTs available:

  • Anything: Kris tries to convince Susie or Lancer.
  • X-Anything: Ralsei tries to convince Susie or Lancer.
  • Sing: Ralsei sings, which causes Susie to fall asleep.
Lancer battle ear cover.png
Susie covering Lancer's ears in battle

To win the battle peacefully, either Anything or X-Anything can be successfully performed on Lancer four times. On the fourth try, Susie covers Lancer's ears, negating either ACTs. Susie can be put to sleep with Sing, or knocked out if her HP is depleted. When Susie is asleep, she cannot be pacified, as Lancer's bike absorbs the Pacify spell. She wakes up on her own after three turns.

To win the battle violently, the party can focus on only attacking Lancer, as Susie takes 70% reduced damage from attacks, rounded up.[124] If knocked down, she gets up with 40 HP after three turns.

Trivia

  • Susie's name is one of the names that prompts a unique response from the voice in the introduction during Chapter 1.
  • Susie appears to be left-handed. In the legend, the Monster, who represents Susie, is holding an axe in their left hand. Susie wields her axe with her left hand during battle, and it is also the hand she uses when throwing Ralsei during the second battle against K. Round.
    • However, she destroys the Last Prophecy tapestry with her right hand in Chapter 4.
  • Susie's dance is similar to Linus's dance from the Peanuts TV special, A Charlie Brown Christmas.
  • Susie is implied to smell "kinda earthy and smokey".[126]
  • As of Chapter 4, Susie is the second monster in the Undertale series to visibly bleed, the first being Sans in the final boss fight of Undertale's Genocide Route.
  • Susie's 'wide' exaggerated sprite is not exclusive to Chapter 2; it also appears in Chapter 4 if the inventory is too full to pick up the JusticeAxe.
  • Susie's SWOON/FELL sprite is also used if Susie is downed while trapped in a gachapon ball during the Doom Board, as well as against the Titan Spawn or Titan.[127]

Susie: Man, I don't wanna go do our group project...
Ralsei: Oh... You two have homework?
    Susie: Uhh, well,

Ralsei: I banish you from this kingdom until you start your project!
    Susie and Ralsei, Chapter 2
  64. Susie: How do you do that, anyway?
    Susie: That... healing... thingy.
Ralsei: Oh, healing magic? It's simple, Susie. Anyone can do it.
Ralsei: ... I could even teach you, if you're interested.
Susie: Heh, ask me again when it's, like, blood explosion magic.
    Susie: ...
Susie: But, um, if you WANTED, I guess I could learn it.
    Susie and Ralsei, Chapter 2
  65. So there's this... Festival in a few days, right?
And, heh, maybe it's stupid, but...
Wouldn't it be kinda... fun? If we all went?
Um, by all, I mean Ralsei too, obviously?
    Susie, Chapter 3
  66. SHUT UP and listen to me!
    No matter what you say...
    No matter what you are...
Me... you... Kris... We're a TEAM, alright?
None of us are gonna forget each other!
    Susie, Chapter 3
  67. Ralsei: I know... I can't go to the festival with you... but...
Ralsei: If I can, I still... want to have fun with you and Kris.
    Susie: ... Ralsei...
    Ralsei: Maybe...
Ralsei: Maybe we could just try playing this game?
Ralsei: If we can't watch TV, maybe we can... be on it?
    Susie: ...
Susie: Alright, FINE. We'll give it a shot.
    Ralsei and Susie, Chapter 3
  68. You can't beat us in the Light World, can you?!
That's... why you keep running, isn't it?
    Hey... hey, what's so funny?
    Kris, why... are they laughing...?
You're laughing 'cause you know I'm right, don't you!?
Susie mocking the Knight, Chapter 4
  69. Susie: Hey... Kris, you, uh, ok?
    You look kinda...
Ralsei: Aww Kris, if you're hurt, Susie can heal you!

Susie and Ralsei, Weird Route, Chapter 2
  70. So hey. While you were keeping Noelle busy...
I looked inside that room next door.
There... was this weird guitar in there.
And on the inside of it...
There was... a code to the Shelter!
... didn't get to write it down, though.
    Susie, Weird Route, Chapter 4
  71. Y'know, Noelle... said she wanted to talk to you.
But... something... about her look was kinda... weird.
    ... Why
... couldn't she just talk to you in front of me?
    Susie, Weird Route, Chapter 4

    Nah, I get it.
Not used to walking around without someone holding your hand?
Susie if Kris walks, Chapter 1
  73. You think just 'cause you don't say anything...
    I can't tell EXACTLY what you're thinking?
"It's OVER! I caught Susie eating ALL the chalk!"
"This was her LAST chance! Now she'll FINALLY be expelled!"
    Haha... Come on, Kris.
    Don't act shocked.
    You know it's true.

    I'm counting on you, OK?
    Susie, Chapter 1
  78. Susie: ... what kinda creepy stuff were you buying anyway?
Susie: Nah... like I even wanna know. Yikes.
Ralsei: She said she hoped if it was candy, you'd share with her...
    Susie: SHUT UP!!!
    Susie: Kris?
    Susie and Ralsei, Chapter 2
  79. ... guess you should go home, huh?
Alright, you don't have to say it.
Don't wanna walk home by yourself, huh?
Well, if you're gonna MAKE me, I guess...
    Let's go.
    Susie, Chapter 2
  80. Susie: Umm, I'll... Here, let me heal it!
Susie: Th... that wasn't enough, huh...
    Ralsei: ... where... is it...

Susie while drawing on the diner window, Chapter 4
  83. ... Y'know, when you played piano earlier... it was...

... I might actually wanna go to church.
    Susie, Chapter 4
  84. Dude, I don't know! I'm just thinking like... damn.
I should get flirting lessons from them.
    Susie, Chapter 4
  85. Noelle: Everything that came out of their mouth, sounded... odd.
Noelle: Like it was like on speaker or something.
Susie: Sounds like normal Kris to me.
Noelle: Well... It wasn't. Something was weird.
Susie: I think Kris's just weird, period.
    Noelle and Susie, Chapter 4
  86. Ralsei: Susie... Whether you like it or not...
    Ralsei: You're a hero.
Ralsei: One with the power to bring peace to the future.
Ralsei: Could you please start... acting like one?
Susie: Yeah, when you lay it out like that...
    Susie: I've been a pretty bad hero, haven't I?
    Ralsei and Susie, Chapter 1
  87. Susie: Heh, how's that!? Meet the new healing master, Kris!
Ralsei: Oh. Yes. She is a real... "master" at it, Kris.

You think I could just FORGET you!?
    Forget Lancer!? Forget everyone!?
I don't care what you say you are...
    You're real to me, OK!?
    Susie to Ralsei, Chapter 3
  90. I was kind of trying to practice a little, but...
    I sorta realized, y'know?
I'll never be as good as Ralsei, so what's the point?
Susie to the Old Man, Chapter 4
  91. ... hey, Ralsei. If you know the whole prophecy already...
... why didn't you just say how to do the piano?
    Susie to Ralsei, Chapter 4
  92. First the roaring thing, then you not being real...
And now THIS!? What's wrong with you!?

Lancer: Hahaha.. It was SO simple!
Lancer: She beat me up, so I ran away...!
    Lancer and Ralsei, Chapter 1
  95. Lancer: Hey, purple girl, was that scarier?
Susie: Why are you asking ME!?
Lancer: Because you're really cool at being terrifying!
Lancer: I wanna be as scary as you!
    Susie: You...
Susie: Want to be like ME?
    Lancer: Yeah!!!
    Susie: Well, that's stupid.
    Susie: ...
Susie: But, umm, the new laugh isn't as awful.
    Lancer and Susie, Chapter 1
  96. Susie: Didja ever wonder why Susie never... picked on you?
    Noelle: (sigh)... All the time...
Susie: MAYBE it's 'cause, when she first came to class.
Susie: You lent her one of your pencils,
Susie: Like, a dumb, uh, candycane-looking one or something.
Susie: And, even though it DIDN'T actually taste like candy,
Susie: She, uh, remembered your smile, and, uh...
Susie: Decided to spare you. Y'know.
    Susie and Noelle, Chapter 2
  97. Damn, we really are heroes!
    And no one even knows!
... guess it's better that way though, right?
People'd freak out if they knew the world's in danger.
... though, kinda sucks Noelle has to forget, too...
    Susie, Chapter 2
  98. Well... guess who's taking your daughter...
    To the FESTIVAL tomorrow, jerk!?

  100. Sounds kinda like Noelle.Susie, using Rhapsotea
  101. Susie: ... So, uh, know any codes to any doors?
Ralsei: Umm... No, haha. I do not.
Susie: ... then, uh, anything about Noelle...?
    Ralsei: Umm...
Ralsei: I know which items of ours she can equip?
Susie: 'kay, you actually know jack. Great.
    Susie and Ralsei, Chapter 4
  102. Catti: Keep Susie away. From Noelle.
Susie: Huh? Hey, you can hate ME or whatever, but...
Noelle can hang out with whoever she wants, furball.
    Catti and Susie, Chapter 4
  103. Toriel: Oh, excuse me. I am Kris's mother, Toriel...
    Susie: Y.. yes, Ma'am. I... remember.
Toriel: Oh, you do? And you are... Susie, are you not?

  104. The Roaring Knight...
Whatever they are, they're making these fountains...
But... is that really a bad thing...?
    Since they started showing up,
Everything's gotten a lot more interesting, hasn't it...?

  105. 105,0 105,1 Original DELTARUNE concept art of the main characters from 2014 or 2015??? The file was just called "THE FUN GANG" November 16, 2018.
  106. ... because I was waiting. November 01, 2018.
  107. I'm looking through what I think is the oldest text document about DELTARUNE that I can find. This is one of the first facts about Susie. Even though this has never happened in the game, everyone just intuitively understands this as true. I won.@tobyfox.undertale.com on Bluesky, June 29, 2025.
  108. As for Susie, I originally designed her right after I had played Phoenix Wright for the first time. At first, she was essentially like Maya Fey, and would serve as your small, friendly, sassy companion. There really wasn't any tension at all, she was just nice and cute.Deltarune creator on the game's origins, progress update, and more (@NE_Brian, February 17, 2019.) Nintendo Everything.
  109. The idea of Ralsei ever looking different was actually fairly recent. Same with abandoning Susie's ponytail. (And making her look tough...) Anyway, as I always say, sometimes it takes a long time to come up with the right idea, so it's OK if you don't get it perfect right away November 16, 2018.
  110. Gigi: The work I’m most proud of is all in Chapter 3. I lost count of how many times I was told “this looks too good” when I turned in a piece of concept art.

Of what’s been shown already, I look back most fondly on my art for Chapter 2’s Cyber City. I’m also very happy every time I get to put the main characters in new outfits.

  111. the first thing i did for DELTARUNE waaas... i think it was the original dark world sprites for kris & susie in chapter 1? gg had already done the character design part, but the only sprites that existed at the time were light world ones. toby wanted me to make some base dark world sprites for temmie to work from.INTERVIEW: CHAPTER 2 DEVELOPMENT TEAM (Chess, October 31, 2023.) toby.fangamer.com.
  112. As for what I’m looking forward to… well, it’s hard to describe this without spoiling anything, but a certain character will learn a certain type of spell that they aren’t really good at. Actually, they’re so bad at it there’s essentially no reason to have them use it at first. But the fact that they learned it and keep practicing it is really heartwarming.Deltarune creator on the game's origins, progress update, and more (@NE_Brian, February 17, 2019.) Nintendo Everything.

When we were consulting with @tobyfox, he wanted to make Susie come off as a delinquent who talks dirty and aggressive, so he said "I would like it if she used 'ore'," and I was a little worried because "the game uses pixel sprites, so the players might mistake her for a boy."kazarinn on Tumblr, November 07, 2018.
